Thighplasty
The skin on the thighs can lose its elasticity with aging or with major weight gain or loss, which may lead to chafing and discomfort.
The thigh lift procedure can be performed on the inner thighs, outer thighs, or both, depending on the patient's needs and aims to create smoother, firmer, and more proportionate thighs that complement the body's overall appearance.
Thigh Lift Procedures: A Step-by-Step Guide
- 1. Preoperative Assessment
The process begins with a detailed consultation with one of our experienced surgeons. During this appointment, the surgeon will review the patient’s medical history, performs a physical examination, and discusses the patient’s goals and expectations.
The surgeon evaluates the amount and quality of excess skin, fat deposits, and muscle tone to determine the most appropriate surgical technique and incision pattern.
Preoperative instructions will be provided, which may include avoiding certain medications or supplements, fasting, putting a stop to habits such as smoking, and maintaining a stable weight before surgery. Patients are also advised to arrange post-operative care and support. - 2. Anaesthesia
On the day of surgery, the patient is brought to the operating room. Thighplasty is typically performed under general anaesthesia, ensuring the patient is asleep and pain-free throughout the procedure.
In some cases, local anaesthesia with sedation may be used, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s health and individual situation.

- 3. Incision Planning
Before beginning the surgery, our surgeon makes precise markings on the thighs to guide the placement of incisions and the amount of skin and tissue to be removed. These markings are essential for achieving optimal results and ensuring symmetry. - 4. Incision Techniques
The choice of incision technique depends on the location and extent of excess skin and fat, the patient’s anatomy, and the desired outcome. The most common thigh lift techniques include:- Inner Thigh Lift (Medial Thigh Lift): An incision is made in the groin area, extending downward along the inner thigh. For patients with moderate skin laxity, this incision may be limited to the crease of the groin. For more extensive laxity, the incision may extend down to the knee.
- Vertical Thigh Lift: This technique involves a vertical incision along the inner thigh, from the groin to the knee. It is used for patients with significant skin laxity and excess skin that extends down the thigh.
- Outer Thigh Lift (Lateral Thigh Lift): An incision is made along the top of the thigh near the hip area, often extending around the buttocks or lower back. This technique is used to address excess skin and fat on the outer thigh and buttocks.
- Spiral Thigh Lift: This technique combines inner and outer thigh lifts to achieve more comprehensive contouring. Incisions are made around the inner thighs, outer thighs, and buttocks to lift and tighten the entire thigh circumference.
- 5. Removing Excess Skin and Fat
Once the incisions are made, the surgeon carefully removes excess skin and fat to create a smoother and more toned thigh contour. Liposuction may be performed in conjunction with a thigh lift to remove excess fat and further sculpt the thighs.
The amount of tissue removed depends on the patient’s anatomy and desired results. The surgeon takes care to avoid removing too much skin, which could lead to tension, poor healing, or an unnatural appearance. - 6. Tightening Underlying Tissues and Contouring
The underlying tissues, such as the supportive connective tissue (fascia) and muscle, are tightened and reshaped to enhance the thigh's overall contour and support the newly tightened skin. This step helps create a more defined and youthful appearance.
Sutures are placed deep within the underlying tissues to provide structural support and minimise tension on the skin closure. - 7. Closing the Incisions
After the excess skin and fat have been removed and the underlying tissues tightened, the remaining skin is re-draped over the new contours of the thigh. The incisions are meticulously closed with sutures, which may be absorbable or non-absorbable.
The surgeon takes great care to ensure that the incisions are well-placed and hidden within natural creases or undergarment lines to minimise visible scarring. - 8. Applying Dressings and Compression Garments After the incisions are closed, the surgical area is covered with sterile dressings. The patient is fitted with a compression garment that wraps around the thighs. This garment helps reduce swelling, supports the healing tissues, and helps the skin conform to the new contours.
The compression garment also reduces the risk of fluid accumulation (seroma) and promotes better circulation for optimal healing. - 9. Thighplasty Postoperative Care and Recovery
After surgery, the patient is taken to a recovery area, where they are monitored until fully awake and stable.
Patients are provided with detailed postoperative care instructions, including how to care for the incision sites, apply prescribed ointments, and wear compression garments as directed.
Pain, swelling, and bruising are common in the first few weeks after surgery and can be managed with prescribed pain medications and over-the-counter pain relievers. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and prolonged sitting for several weeks.
Follow-up consultations are scheduled within the first week after surgery to monitor the healing process, remove any non-dissolvable sutures, and assess for potential complications such as infection, hematoma, or seroma formation.
Additional follow-up consultations are scheduled over the next few weeks and months to ensure proper healing, address any concerns, and evaluate the final results.
Like any surgical procedure, Thighplasty carries potential risks and complications. Most complications are rare and can be minimised by following the surgeon’s postoperative care instructions carefully.
